What We Do
Our Chapter brings together professional women from across Belize’s maritime and shipping industries — including maritime administration, port operations, coast guard services, environmental management, logistics, and related sectors.
We are committed to strengthening gender equality in maritime through leadership development, advocacy, training initiatives, industry engagement, and community outreach.

History of WiMAC
The Women in Maritime Association of the Caribbean (WiMAC) was established in 2015 as a regional network of female maritime professionals committed to increasing the participation, performance, and leadership of women within the maritime sector.

The Women in Maritime Association of the Caribbean (WiMAC) was established in 2015 as a regional network of female maritime professionals committed to increasing the participation, performance, and leadership of women within the maritime sector.
WiMAC was formed under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations specialized agency responsible for regulating global shipping. Through IMO’s global Women in Maritime Programme, regional associations like WiMAC were created to strengthen gender equality and enhance capacity-building across maritime administrations worldwide.
WiMAC Caribbean brings together women from maritime authorities, port administrations, coast guard services, shipping companies, marine environmental agencies, training institutions, and related industries across the Caribbean region.
The Role of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)
The International Maritime Organization has been a global champion for women’s advancement in maritime since the late 1980s. Through its Women in Maritime Programme, the IMO works to:
- Promote gender balance in maritime administrations
- Support leadership and technical training for women
- Facilitate the creation of regional women’s maritime associations
- Encourage inclusive policy development within the shipping industry
WiMAC Caribbean is one of eight regional associations established with IMO support, reinforcing the global commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity within maritime.
